  • The national Sparky Awards 2009 attracted almost 50 entries including two Penn entries. This annual contest organized by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and co-sponsored by Penn Libraries, celebrates student creativity.
  • Ryan Leonard, winner of the 2007 Mashup Contest, is now making videos for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and his latest creation is showcased in a February 6, 2009 article in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
  • Student videos from Louise Krasniewicz's Spring 2008 anthropology class are in a new Video Showcase. These are from the same class whose work is in the Comic Life Showcase of student created comic books.
  • A photo slideshow is now online from at our third annual Student Experiences Abroad event on January 29, 2009.
  • Penn Libraries announces improvements in public printing:
    • Single sided black-and-white printing is now 7 cents a page. Single sided color printing is now 28 cents a page. Double-sided (duplex) black-and-white printing is now 10 cents per double-sided page. WIC has one duplex printer, two BW printers and one color printer in the commons area and one BW and one color printer in the Vitale Digital Media Lab.
    • You must create a username and password now to print a document. This ensures privacy. To release a job, swipe your card, select your document, hit print, then enter your password.
    • In Van Pelt, all black and white jobs sent from any public computer in the building will be available at any release station in the building. This includes WIC and the Vitale Digital Media Lab.
  • The Vitale Digital Media Lab has changed their price to $.02/square inch for the poster printer. To see other info about printing posters, including new typical poster prices, please see our Poster Printer FAQ.
  • Having difficulty connecting to wireless using Air Penn Net? Please go to Air Penn Net - instructions have been updated there.
  • Browse casual photos from the Photo Booth at the Penn Library Social 2008 or watch the slideshow.
  • We now have InDesign CS3 up and running on the workstations in the Vitale Digital Media Lab.

  • We are proud to announce a new series of video clips - Thinking Creatively about Video Assignments - A Conversation with Penn Faculty - that discusses pedagogical and planning aspects of students creating movies as class assignments.

  • On September 26, we held the Teaching with New Media Symposium.
  • The Class of 1968 Seminar Room now includes 20 MacBook Pro laptops. Faculty can request this room online

  • Lauren Pressley's library blog entry on August 1, 2008 has highlighted WIC.
  • Penn Libraries staff presented a session on student created video projects at the 2008 New Media Consortium (NMC) Annual Conference at Princeton University June 11 through 14. The NMC selected the Weigle Information Commons for one of ten awards for "Five Minutes of Fame" (Watch the video)
  • We congratulate the six winners of the Seltzer Family Digital Media Awards for 2008. Their accomplishment has been noted in the Almanac.
  • Mashup Awards 2008 winners can be viewed online. The award ceremony with guest Leah Kauffman took place on April 17.
  • Our music video has been noted by the Karen Munro, E-learning Librarian blog.
  • Our Online Tutorials page includes our iMovie handout and a new page on Steps in Making a Mashup
  • Our first annual report is available online (PDF format).
  • The Weigle Information Commons has been selected for the cover photograph for the January 2008 issue of the Choice magazine published by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)
  • We held Student Experiences Abroad on January 31, 2008. Mera Lafferty's Critical Writing class created this blog entry about the evening.
  • Check out the Weigle Information Commons music video! This video was conceived, written, performed, and edited entirely by Penn students.
  • Access WIC info on your iPod! Search for the keyword pennwic in iTunes to bring WIC videos and PDF documents to your iPod.
  • Need computer help now? The Library ITA next to the Vitale Digital Media Lab can help with Van Pelt laptop or PC technical issues, Office2007, wireless connectivity and printing.
  • The Printer Driver instructions allow students to print directly from personal laptops to the WIC printers.
  • The WICshops page lists upcoming workshops and events.
  • The Virtual Tours of the WIC provide an interactive viewing experience.
  • Software in the Vitale Digital Media Lab enables you to import YouTube videos into iMovie.
  • The Equipment Lending Program provides videocameras and other gadgets for a three-day period.
  • Office 2007 is available on PC laptops in booths and rooms. Download the compatibility pack to your PC to work with Office 2007 files using Office 2003.
  • Booths 1 through 6 can be reserved online. Several other group study rooms in Van Pelt Dietrich Library Center can also be reserved online.
  • Penn Library Social 2007 Video Welcome and casual photos from the Photo Booth.
  • The library toolbar includes a drop-down click to the WIC website.
  • In three group study rooms (127 , 128 and 129), you can easily record video. Instructions are in the room and online. Please bring a blank DVD with you.
