Workshops Open for Registration
Registration generally opens two weeks prior to each session. All workshops are open without registration fees to Penn students,
faculty, and staff unless otherwise noted. You are welcome to stop by without registration to take an open seat at any wprkshop. Our workshops are co-sponsored
by the Graduate Student Center. Technology WICshops are designed to provide overview and foster
exploration.

Blackboard : BB Tests, Pools and Surveys
Blackboard courseware workshops designed for faculty, instructors and graduate students. Explore the Blackboard assessment tools of Pools, Tests and Surveys. The Pools tool creates banks of questions to be used in several tests. The Tests tool creates 15 question types including multiple choice, fill-in and short answer. The Surveys tool can test or query students anonymously.
Faculty Fridays : Make your First Blog
This series is designed for faculty and instructors and provides hands-on experiences with new media, software and online resources. Learn how to set up a blog step by step. Embed pictures, video or audio clips, and create discussion forums. We will use the free online blog service Blogspot (owned by Google) and you will leave with a blog that is published and ready for your ongoing posts. Presented by Rashmi Kumar, PennGSE graduate student.
Faculty Fridays : Second Life and Virtual Worlds
This series is designed for faculty and instructors and provides hands-on experiences with new media, software and online resources. Explore Second Life hands-on and learn about projects involving virtual worlds on campus. Presented by Anu Vedantham, WIC Director and Ed Dixon, Technology Director at the Penn Language Center.
From Assignments to References : Make a Great Poster with PowerPoint
Communication within the Curriculum (CWiC), Weingarten Learning Resources Center (VPUL), Writing Center and Penn Libraries assist undergraduates with research, writing, presentation, organization and technology. Trying to create a poster to explain your research project to others? Wondering how to make a powerful visual statement? We will explore designing your poster in PowerPoint. We will look at page size options, font and color choices, Word Art, Autoshapes and drawing tools. Bring your poster information with you as well as your personal laptop if appropriate. We will share tips and tricks for poster formatting, show examples and discuss preparing a PDF for printing in the Vitale Digital Media Lab or similar facility. Communication within the Curriculum (CWiC), Weingarten Learning Resources Center (VPUL), Writing Center and Penn Libraries assist undergraduates with research, writing, presentation, organization and technology. Participants will learn approaches to public speaking that influence speech anxiety, and they will practice specific strategies for managing nervousness. Presented by CWIC undergraduate advisors.
From Assignments to References : The Editing and Revising Process
Communication within the Curriculum (CWiC), Weingarten Learning Resources Center (VPUL), Writing Center and Penn Libraries assist undergraduates with research, writing, presentation, organization and technology. This workshop will help students consider how to appropriately edit and revise writing assignments. Please bring your writing assignment, either in final or draft form, to the workshop. We will work through different methods of improving the paper for readability and coherence. Presented by Fayyaz Vellani from the Critical Writing Program.
Microsoft Excel : Charts and Graphs
This popular spreadsheet package provides significant data analysis and graphing capabilities. We will focus on Excel features for graphs and charts. We will discuss multiple axes, formatting data, choosing chart type, adding notes and images, and customizing your charts. We will discuss how to export charts to other formats including Word, PowerPoint and PDF. This is a hands-on workshop.

Participants will learn to create new presentations, apply design templates, manipulate text, insert graphics, prepare notes and handouts from PowerPoint slides, save presentations, and more. RefWorks
Learn the basics of how to create your own personal bibliographic citation database using this web-based bibliographic management tool. The workshop will focus on how to create a personal database online, import references automatically from databases and library catalogs, organize and annotate references, format references and bibliographies in Microsoft Word documents and more. NOTE: RefWorks is freely available to all current Penn students, faculty, and staff.
Technically Speaking Series : Mac Use Basics
This series showcases new technologies. Vendor presentations may include sales-related content. This workshop begins with a presentation on basics of Mac desktop use, overview of popular software services, multimedia and device connections followed by hands-on exploration and guidance. Presented by undergraduate Jacob Finkel, who is the Apple campus representative for Penn.Designed for new Mac users.
