WICShops: Programs and Events

Workshops Open for Registration
Registration generally opens two weeks prior to each session. All workshops are open without registration fees to Penn students, faculty, and staff unless otherwise noted. You are welcome to stop by without registration to take an open seat at any workshop. Our workshops are co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Center. Technology WICshops are designed to provide overview and foster exploration.

Blackboard : Basics
Blackboard courseware workshops designed for faculty, instructors and graduate students. Learn how to manage your course site, upload documents and syllabi, send email to students, create announcements and manage your student rosters. Learn how to use this professional Web design program. We will explore Dreamweaver for changes in page design. We will create pages with blank and templated layouts, add text, links, images and rollover images. We will discuss ways to make your website more functional on multiple platforms and browsers. Presented by Lisa Marie Patzer.

Learn how to use this professional Web design program. We will provide small group assistance for your Dreamweaver project work. Please bring your files with you. This is not a formal workshop on Dreamweaver. This is an opportunity to work with assistance on your website, and gain understanding of the software.

Learn how to create spreadsheets, enter and format data, use mathematical calculations, and more. This is a basic course, addressed to users with no previous experience with the software.

Learn how to use Apple's iMovie '09 software, which is available for Penn students, faculty, and staff in the Vitale Digital Media Lab. This class will provide a hands-on introduction to using Apple iMovie software, which is available for Penn students, faculty, and staff in the Vitale Digital Media Lab. You will learn how to capture video from a DVD, VHS tape, or from your own video camera. You will learn to organize or delete video clips, add a new soundtrack, add subtitles, and create special effects.

Learn how to open, create, and save image files. Participants will learn to make a variety of basic but important adjustments to photographs using some of the many tools Photoshop makes available.

This professional image-editing software assists with online and print publications. In this fast-paced class, we will introduce and explore one of the most fundamental yet powerful features in Photoshop -- Layers, which allow you to edit your images in a nondestructive way, isolate areas of your images for specific adjustments, repair damage, correct & enhance colors, fix problems in composition, and more, all while retaining as much flexibility and editability as possible. We will examine the Photoshop Layers palette, color adjustment layers, layer masks, type layers, shape layers, blending modes, and tricks for organizing complex files. This class assumes a working knowledge of Photoshop basics.

PowerPoint workshops are presented at several levels. Please note that in this class we will use PowerPoint 2007 or 2010. Learn the basics of PowerPoint hands-on. Participants will learn to create new presentations, apply design templates, manipulate text, insert graphics, prepare notes and handouts from PowerPoint slides, save presentations, and more.

RefWorks
Learn the basics of how to create your own personal bibliographic citation database using this web-based bibliographic management tool. The workshop will focus on how to create a personal database online, import references automatically from databases and library catalogs, organize and annotate references, format references and bibliographies in Microsoft Word documents and more. NOTE: RefWorks is freely available to all current Penn students, faculty, and staff.
Technically Speaking Series : Assigning Video Projects
This series explores new technologies. We will share examples of video projects used in a variety of classes at Penn. We will show video examples of student work, discuss ideas for assignment design, assessment and showcasing completed projects. Designed for faculty, instructors, graduate students.
Technically Speaking Series : Clickers with PowerPoint
This series explores new technologies. TurningPoint is the audience response system of choice at Penn. The program works with PowerPoint to promote interaction between a presenter and his/her audience using a clicker device. TurningPoint Anywhere is a similar program that can be used with Keynote, PDF, web and other software. We will explore Installing TurningPoint software, creating interactive PowerPoint slides, hardware setup, and polling with response devices. Time will be reserved to touch on more advanced features including connecting polling data to course management software. Bring your laptop with you if convenient.

This series explores new technologies. Store, edit, and share documents with collaborators using Dropbox and Google Drive. Learn about the features of each service, from setting permissions to sharing large files. Please bring your own laptop to this workshop.
