Workshops Open for Registration
Registration generally opens two weeks prior to each session. All workshops are open without registration fees to Penn students, faculty, and staff unless otherwise noted. You are welcome to stop by without registration to take an open seat at any workshop. Our workshops are co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Center. Technology WICshops are designed to provide overview and foster exploration.

Excel : Charts
Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program. Creating Charts is one of the most powerful functions in Excel. In this workshop we will show you how to create charts very quickly, fine-tune charts with a variety of tools and functions, and other useful tips expanding the power of Excel charts.
Excel : Macros
Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program. This is an introductory workshop for people with no or little prior knowledge of Excel Macros. Macros in Excel are automation capabilities that help people eliminate the drudgery associated with repetitious command sequences or data manipulation tasks. In this workshop, we will walk you through creating and running simple macros, getting familiar with basic VBA code, and learning other useful tips that will expand the power of Macros.

Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program. This workshop will teach you powerful Excel tricks and shortcuts to increase your work efficiency and productivity. We will show you how to eliminate time in data entry and editing, how to rapidly create formulas and charts to calculate and display results in no time, and other powerful shortcuts that can save you tons of time in navigating data in Excel.
Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator provides powerful ways to designing print publications, brochures, flyers and web graphics. It works well with PDF files and can handle a wide variety of image formats. iMovie
Learn how to use Apple's iMovie '11 software. This class will provide a hands-on introduction to using Apple iMovie software, which is available for Penn students, faculty, and staff in the Vitale Digital Media Lab. You will learn how to capture video from a DVD, VHS tape, or from your own video camera. You will learn to organize or delete video clips, add a new soundtrack, add subtitles, and create special effects.
NVivo : Basics
NVivo is software that supports qualitative and mixed methods research. This workshop will start with an in-depth introduction to capabilities of the software including navigating the overall interface; running visualizations and queries, and incorporating categorical data. Following this demonstration, workshop participants will be guided through the steps for creating a project, importing sources, and coding. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own data to get guidance on how to construct their database and explore their research questions. Presented by Shimrit Keddem.
PowerPoint : Creating Voiceover Narration
PowerPoint workshops are presented at several levels. Please note that in this class we will use PowerPoint 2010. In this short session, learn how to create voiceover narration on a PowerPoint presentation and export the file to a video. For the first half hour of the workshop, we will practice on a sample presentation (provided in class). The second half will be informal help and practice on a presentation of choice. This type of activity is a popular choice for MOOC content creation.

PowerPoint workshops are presented at several levels. Please note that in this class we will use PowerPoint 2010. In this short session, learn how to embed a video from a website or a link to a video into your PowerPoint presentation. For the first half hour of the workshop, we will practice on a sample presentation (provided in class). The second half will be informal help and practice on a presentation of choice.
Technically Speaking Series : Adobe Connect for Student Outreach
This series explores new technologies. Adobe Connect can provide a robust, flexible way to conduct online orientation and welcome sessions with large groups of students scattered around the world. Dr. Anita Mastroieni, Director of the Graduate Student Center and Family Resource Center, will share her experiences running a successful series of events for incoming graduate students, and will discuss ways to get started with online outreach events. This is not a hands-on workshop.
Technically Speaking Series : Mac Use Basics
This series explores new technologies. For new Mac users, learn tips and tricks to get the most out of your Mac experience! This workshop will cover questions frequently asked by Mac switchers. We will take a tour of the Mac, covering topics like must-know shortcuts, applications like Finder and Spotlight, and little-known tips and tricks that will make your life much easier.
Technically Speaking Series : Video Camera Basics
This series explores new technologies. Use Canon Vixia HD cameras to create videos to promote events, share thoughts, conduct interviews, capture moments. We will cover some of the manual functions of the camera, lighting situations, and how to record good audio. We will also show you how to back up and organize your videos on the computer.
WIC Seminar : Scholarly Podcasting Workshop
A Weigle Information Commons seminar. What does scholarship sound like? How do we incorporate audio into our work as researchers and pedagogues? In this workshop, we will work through some of the production techniques from the Annenberg School for Communication weekly 3620 podcast and discuss ways to use them in our classrooms and practices. Presented by Kevin Gotkin, doctoral student at the Annenberg School for Communication.

WordPress is a great choice for easy blog and website creation. This workshop provides a followup to the WordPress Basics WICshop. Learn how to make the most of your WordPress site by customizing your theme, menus, header and more. Some knowledge of WordPress is assumed.

WordPress is a great choice for easy blog and website creation. This workshop introduces the free WordPress.com service. We will walk through common tasks like posting and creating pages, inserting media, browsing themes and controlling privacy settings. This workshop aims to present a general overview of WordPress and to help you gain a sense of what is possible with this blogging platform.
