FREN 202 Fall 2009

September 2009 Training Plan and Links
  1. Set up a new Google gmail account just for this course. We recommend a generic username such as your initials followed by "fren202". You can use an existing email account as the backup contact information for the new account.
  2. Log in to the new account. Accept the presenter's invitation to join the class Google Doc and then add your name and the new gmail account on the class list.
  3. Set up a new blog at blogger.com. Again, we recommend a generic blogname.
  4. Make the blog restricted by invitation only. Give your classmates read access to the blog. Give the presenter and your professor admin access to the blog.
  5. Add the disclaimer language to the blog footer:
This blog was created as part of a pedagogical project for the purposes of linguistic and cultural learning. It is open exclusively to participants in the class-project. The ideas expressed on this blog are those of fictitious characters and do not reflect the opinions of the project moderator nor the University of Pennsylvania.
  6. Start exploring your new blog by adding entries, images and links.
  7. We will demonstrate simple video creation using the Data Diner Booth laptops and Macbook laptops in the Seminar Room and Media Lab. Online tutorials are available for Windows Movie Maker (a free program for all PCs), iMovie versions 08 and 09, and iMovie version 06. Workshops are available for iMovie 09, and one-on-one assistance is available in the Media Lab. The WIC Desk staff can provide one-on-one assistance with Windows Movie Maker in the Data Diner Booths.
  8. Please note that Blogger has a maximum limit of 100 Mb for movie size. The format chosen is important - web format is most efficient in terms of file size. It often takes several minutes to upload even a short video, and a wired Internet connection is much more reliable for video upload than a wireless connection. You can move files from a laptop to a desktop or other location using a USB flash drive or a data DVD.
  9. This instruction sheet provides details on compressing your video if it is larger than 100 Mb in size.
  10. Blogger can embed YouTube videos easily. For student privacy reasons, please do not put your webcam videos on YouTube.

Please don't hesitate to contact the WIC Desk or the Media Lab staff for assistance.
