Gadget Day - Wednesday April 11, 2012

Join us for a day of exploration. Our program includes Skype, Pixelture, GotoMeeting, Adobe Connect, Teamviewer, a variety of iPad apps, tips for using Firefox, introductions to several mobile phones, Tumblr and scanning technologies.

biomed ipad Biomedical Apps for iPad: The iPad has proven to be a useful tool for researchers and practitioners in the Health Sciences. Learn about apps and mobile-optimized web tools designed for biomedical reference, research, and clinical practice. Presented by Frank Campbell, Health Sciences Liaison at Penn Libraries.
skype Skype: Skype is a free tool that lets you talk, screen share, and video chat in real time with friends and colleagues, whether they are across the globe or just in the office next door. Keep up with contacts or facilitate group meetings from your computer or mobile device. Presented by Caitlin Shanley, Educational Technology Librarian.
pixelture Pixelture: Pixelture allows anyone to share their laptop screen via the WIC Seminar Room projector over wireless Internet, and provides a powerful teaching tool, especially for sharing student work. View details. Presented by Anu Vedantham, WIC Director.
teamviewer Teamviewer: Teamviewer is a free tool that lets you connect to and remote control other PCs, without making the person on the other side download a thing. Use it to provide remote support, access your home computer, or even help your grandma set up her new laptop. Presented by Barbara Kountouzi, Coordinator of Education and Media Services at the Penn Biomedical Library.
evernote Evernote for iPad: Evernote is a powerful way to combine personal and professional tasks, from planning your schedule to organizing your research. Update your information from any device and stay on top of your academic and professional goals. Presented by Gary Jarvis, Reference and Instructional Services Intern.
noteshelf Noteshelf for iPad: Noteshelf is a handwriting app that helps you take and organize notes, and then seamlessly sync them to Evernote and Dropbox. Presented by David Toccafondi, Coordinator of Services at the Vitale Digital Media Lab.
adobe connect Adobe Connect: Adobe Connect is a robust tool that helps facilitate instruction and collaboration in an online environment. Teach a class, host a meeting, or record a workshop for asynchronous viewers, all from a Flash-based web client. Presented by Anu Vedantham, WIC Director.
splashtop Splashtop Whiteboard: Learn how to turn an iPad into an interactive whiteboard for instructors and students. Presented by Jake Landis, Assistant Director for Online Learning and Digital Engagement at Penn LPS.
doxie scanner Doxie Scanner: Doxie makes scanning easy - just insert your paper to digitize your notes, handouts, course materials, and more, automatically, to PDFs you can save and share. Presented by David Toccafondi, Coordinator of Services at the Vitale Digital Media Lab.
mobile phone Mobile Platforms: Explore a variety of current mobile platforms and get updates on Android, Windows Phone 7, iOS, BlackBerry OS, and more. Presented by Jordan McClead from ISC Client Services Group.
firefox Advanced Firefox Usage: Firefox is Mozilla's powerful user-first browser. Tweaking your settings and extensions can totally change the way you interact with the web. Jordan McClead from ISC Client Services Group will share how he uses Firefox and provide some suggestions. This session will be followed by a hands-on workshop with WIC Desk Intern Chao Xiang.
facebook Facebook for iPad: Though Facebook has become a household name, Facebook's iPad app has some new features for even the most experienced social media guru. Learn about posting mobile photos, tap through the app's simplified navigation, and experience the Facebook features you know and love using a tablet platform. Presented by Samantha Barry, WIC Desk Intern.
twitter Twitter for iPad: Learn how to take advantage of the Twitter iPad app's special features for keeping up with your contacts and trending topics. Presented by Marie Jaquish, WIC Desk Intern.
pinterest Pinterest: Pinterest is a virtual pinboard which has recently skyrocketed in popularity. Pinterest allows users to collect and organize images from one's own computer, online, or re-pin material from other Pinterest users. This workshop will provide a walk-through of Pinterest's features, as well as open a dialogue on the site's controversial copyright policies. Presented by Samantha Barry, WIC Desk Intern.
tumblr Tumblr: Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking website that allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Presented by Lindsey Martin, WIC Lab Consultant.
SimpleMind for iPad: SimpleMind is an app which creates a visual web of thoughts and ideas. Using the concept of mind mapping, SimpleMind clusters related brainstormed concepts, using formatting to make connections clear. Presented by Samantha Barry, WIC Desk Intern.
GoToMeeting: GoToMeeting is a web-based service for remote meeting and desktop sharing. Presented by John MacDermott, Director for Instructional Technology at Penn SAS.
